I’m sympathetic to the fact it’s not as easy for people of other generations. Really, I am. Like many other members of Gen Y still living at home, I’m often conscripted to help my mother learn how to attach documents to an email, find out where that file she downloaded went (“I swear I clicked ‘send to desktop!’”), or figure out how to input formulas on excel sheets to calculate spending for the month.
I know she’s just as frustrated as I am, but we both have different reasons for this exasperation. She is angry it’s taking her so long to learn how to do things others deem simple, and I am peeved because I have to repeat a step four times before it makes sense to her.
But here’s the thing: At least she’s trying. This is an attitude many operators have to adopt if they hope to stay up to date with the latest technology that can help them run their businesses in an efficient and modern way. “Have an open mind” isn’t just something we Millennials say to anger people set in their ways; it’s the only way to be if you want to reap the benefits of tech.
Here are three steps you can take to help you avoid common pitfalls in adapting to everything from new reservation systems to apps and everything in between:
Relax: Whenever you get stressed or upset, it only worsens the situation. If you let your emotions cloud your ability to see the final desirable outcome, they will only make it impossible for you to succeed.
Try to place your goal into perspective: Does getting angry or frustrated do anything to help you achieve that goal? My guess would be no. Keep your eyes on the prize and ask for help from someone you’re comfortable around when you know you’ll need it.
Listen: If and when you do end up asking for help, give that person your full attention. Show you have a sincere interest in learning from them instead of glancing at your phone every 30 seconds. Distractions will not help you learn. If you don’t understand a step or need something repeated, ask nicely and before the instructor moves on to the next phase.
Stay Positive: Coming into a situation with a negative attitude will undoubtedly end in a negative result. Consider the fact that by succeeding in seeking, purchasing, and understanding new technology, your business will only benefit. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t have a back-up plan in place in case of an emergency (crashes, glitches, acts of God, etc.); an understanding of the cloud could help in that situation, too. But that’s an article for another time.
