Windows 7 Beta : What's the Real Deal? |
Windows 7. The best version of Windows yet? Oh sure, everyone has their input on the beta release. Well, here's my two cents about Windows based on my testing of the product. Honestly, I see now reason at all to upgrade to Windows 7, nor do I think Windows 7 offers any sort of advantage over Windows Vista at all, honestly. The main issue that I think Windows has, has always had, and will always have, is the registry being the main vulnerability in the operating system. The registry is so easily corrupted by viruses; I don't know why MS doesn't axe it and replace it with something better. The lack of system registry is by far probably why Mac OS X users don't suffer the many viruses and spyware apps that Windows users have. It's not that people aren't interested in screwing up your Mac too. It's just not as easy.
Ok so that said, Vista took long enough to mature, and it's still got issues, I would not be upgrading to Windows 7 unless it's OEM'ed with your next computer. It's not a huge upgrade from Vista. It's sort of like Vista part two if anything... of course the final release will hopefully have some actual noticeable differences from Vista, I hope... but pretty much the only thing that I really annoyed me, was that I could not get Microsoft Office 2007, particularly Powerpoint to work correctly at all when merging chart data from Excel. I experienced continual lock-ups and loss of files.
Pretty much the one thing that I know about Microsoft applications and Operating systems, is that if you are an actual power user, you shouldn't upgrade to the new Microsoft OS right away; when it boils down to you actually having to sit down and do work, you're going to probably go nuts helping Microsoft figure out which bug is where; and probably you will end up re-installing your old Vista or Server 2008 again anyway. If you want to really play it cool, go OSx86 on pc hardware or run Windows in a virtual machine with VMWare.
